Engineering Excellence for a Smarter Future

Canada, along with 190 other countries and the Government of Alberta, have set a target to have all buildings NETZERO by 2050. The current definition of NETZERO is a building that creates as much energy as it consumes in a year.

On the way to NETZERO is the intermediate step of ZERO CARBON, a building that does not burn anything to create energy. The Hi-Tech Seals Building is a great example of this. All heating and cooling is done with electrical heat pumps. Hot water tanks are electric. Most of the electric power is generated using Solar PV modules mounted on the roof and on the south façade.

ZERO CARBON STATUS ACHIEVED

We don’t have a gas meter, so our building is considered a Zero Carbon facility. No gas line means no gas bill—and no Carbon Tax

We heat and cool our 32,000 sq ft building using ground source heat pumps. The electricity they use is offset by our solar PV system on the roof of our building.

THE ALBERTA ADVANTAGE (AUC RULE 024)

We leverage Alberta’s Microgeneration rules to turn the grid into a virtual battery. By overproducing in summer, we sell power to the grid at high rates (~30¢/kWh) and buy it back in winter at low rates (~9¢/kWh), generating a net financial credit.
